Rugged Tablets: A Powerful Tool for Challenging Needs

Today's consumer-grade tablets have come a long way in appearance and functionality, but they often fail to meet the challenging demands of industrial applications. This has led to an increasing demand for rugged, practical industrial tablets. Industrial tablets are purpose-built and driven tools that are often powerful and feature-packed to meet the needs of various industries for critical elements such as time and safety.

Once you decide to incorporate an industrial tablet into your workflow, you need to do detailed research and make an informed choice. If you think an industrial tablet can meet your brand's individual needs, then you need to find a model that meets your requirements.

Rugged Tablet Features:

Rugged tablets are designed to withstand harsh environments and rough handling, making them ideal for industries such as construction, manufacturing, and transportation. These tablets are built with military-grade materials that are impact-resistant and can withstand extreme temperatures, making them durable and long-lasting. Additionally, rugged tablets are equipped with features such as hot-swappable batteries, which allow for extended use without the need for recharging. They also have anti-glare screens that are readable in bright sunlight, making them suitable for outdoor use. Other features include barcode scanners, RFID readers, and vehicle docking stations, making rugged tablets versatile and practical tools for a variety of industries.

Waterproof Options:

One of the most important features of rugged tablets is their waterproof capabilities. These devices are designed to withstand exposure to water and other liquids, making them ideal for use in wet environments such as construction sites or marine settings. Rugged tablets are typically rated with an IP rating, which indicates the level of protection against dust and water. Higher IP ratings mean better protection against water and dust, with some tablets even being fully submersible. Waterproof rugged tablets also typically have sealed ports and connectors, which further protect the device from damage.

A tablet’s waterproofness is measured using the International Protection (or IP) code and denoted using IP markings. This system is officially referred to as the IPXX system, with waterproofness indicated by the two variables at the end. These variables become numbers that demonstrate an item’s ability to withstand:

X – no data
0 – water ingress
1 – vertically dripping water (if exposure is ten minutes or less)
2 – tilted dripping water
3 – water sprayed against the item
4 – water splashing against the item from any angle
5 – water jets of 12.5 LPM at 30kPa and 3M distance
6 – water jets of 100 LPM at 100kPa and 3M distance
7 – immersion up to 1m in depth
8 – continuous submerged operation as deep as 3m
9 – water jets of 100 LPM at 100kPa and 3M distance at 80 degrees C

In some cases, an IPXX rating is followed by a letter, which notes additional information such as:

F – oil-resistance
H – high voltage
M – device in motion during testing
W – rated for special weather conditions
K – extra high pressure at close range (8-10 MPa)

Touchscreen Advantages:

Another key feature of rugged tablets is their touchscreen technology. Touchscreens allow for intuitive and easy-to-use interfaces that can be operated even while wearing gloves. This is particularly useful in environments where workers need to keep their hands protected, such as in construction, manufacturing, or healthcare. With the ability to use touchscreens, workers can easily navigate through applications and input data, making their jobs more efficient and productive.

Wi-Fi, 4G LTE, Bluetooth, and GPS Wireless Connectivity:

Rugged tablets are also equipped with a range of wireless connectivity options, including Wi-Fi, 4G LTE, Bluetooth, and GPS. These features allow workers to stay connected and communicate with their colleagues and supervisors, even in remote locations. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity allow for easy data transfer and sharing, while 4G LTE provides internet connectivity wherever there is cellular coverage. GPS is particularly useful for workers who need to navigate to different job sites, making it easier for them to find their way and avoid getting lost.

Multiple Operating Systems:

Rugged tablets are available with a range of operating systems, including Windows, Android, and iOS. This provides users with the flexibility to choose an operating system that is best suited to their needs and preferences. Windows is a popular choice for businesses that need to run Microsoft Office and other Windows-based applications. Android and iOS, on the other hand, are popular choices for their user-friendly interfaces and wide range of applications.
