Solution for selecting industrial control pc for multi-serial-port cabinet

1. Background

The customer plans to select a high-performance host device for its cabinet control system for data collection and equipment collaborative management in industrial environments.

The industrial control host needs to be integrated into the standard cabinet as the core control unit to connect multiple industrial equipment. Due to the limited space inside the cabinet and the complex communication interface of the equipment, the customer requires the host to have rich serial port resources, and at the same time, it needs to take into account the computing performance and long-term operation stability to meet the high-frequency data transmission needs of the industrial site.

2. Customer core needs

(1). Equipment specification requirements: A rackmount pc is required to adapt to the cabinet space;

(2). Serial port resource expansion: Support 8 RS-232 serial ports and 2 RS-485 serial ports to meet the communication needs of multiple devices;

(3). Performance configuration: Equipped with the sixth-generation Intel Core i5 processor to ensure data processing efficiency;

(4). System management optimization: Port label management function needs to be provided to simplify the equipment maintenance process;

(5). Long-term stability: The 4u rackmount computer needs to support 7×24 hours of uninterrupted operation to adapt to the temperature and humidity changes in the industrial environment.



3.Selection process

(1). Demand analysis

SINSMART TECH engineers first locked in the two core requirements of "multi-serial port expansion" and "rack-mounted design", and screened the rack pc that support PCI/PCIe expansion slots in the SINSMART TECH product library (Tips: the number of serial ports of standard models is generally insufficient, and expansion cards are required to achieve the goal). Combined with the customer's requirements for processors, models that support the sixth-generation i5 platform and have strong expansion capabilities were initially selected.

(2). Serial port expansion solution

For the needs of 8 RS-232 and 2 RS-485 interfaces, a motherboard with 2 RS-485 and 4 RS-232 interfaces can be selected, and then 4 RS-232 serial port cards can be added through a multi-channel serial port expansion card.


3.Performance and stability verification

After selecting the hardware framework, the engineer further verified the performance of the industrial rackmount computer:

(1). Equipped with i5-6500 processor and 4GB memory to ensure smooth operation of multi-threaded tasks;

(2). Adopting 1TB solid-state hard disk to improve data reading and writing speed and anti-vibration performance;

(3). Equipped with 300W industrial-grade power supply to ensure the stability of long-term high-load operation.
